about
Jessie Scarlet‘s debut single ‘Runaway’ marries together melancholia and optimism with loads of
catchy, melodic vocals, ethereal piano hooks and soaring walls of guitar noise.
The lyrics for ‘Runaway' hit hard with themes of empowerment, disappointment and empathy for a
subject many of her listeners will have experienced over the years - that of frustration, but also
realisation of self worth and liberation
Jessie has experimented with production, working with Ben Williams, an up and coming Redditch
based producer, using a variety of instrumentation that she didn’t have an opportunity to use in
previous projects, such as synthesisers, acoustic guitars and piano.
The carefully thought out musical arrangement of the piano works alongside the other instruments
to perfectly support the cleverly arranged chorus vocal to create an uplifting atmospheric explosion
in your ears
‘Runaway is about continuously being let down by people running away from their responsibilities, unable to take ownership for their own actions.
It talks about seeing someone with rose coloured glasses on for such a long time, and then coming to a realisation that they just deflect and project their flaws onto others and run away from the
consequences of their own actions.
Its essentially about realising some people are spineless and their morals don’t match up with your expectations, and freeing yourself of any blame - Run away like a snake, do you, but do it away from me - run far far away from me, sort of vibes.
I wanted people to feel like they’re being hurtled up into space in a narrow line hemmed in with their frustrations, and then explode them into liberation.
Ben Williams is a fantastic producer and he really understood where I wanted to take the track and
its been one of the best experiences of my career working on this track with him'
lyrics
When we start
Back at the beginning
When we were better than we are
Pulled apart
I see we were sinking
Sinking down sinking down
All you ever did was run away
You try so hard to
keep on moving forward
Finding comfort in your lies
Wasting days wasting time
Keeping blinkers on your eyes
Kept inside
After all this time
So you don’t have to see the light
All you ever did was run away
I want you to run away from me
from me
Running far
From everyone
Running straight
From what you’ve done
And I want you to run away
I used to drown inside your name
Afraid of feeling any pain
There was nowhere to turn away
Now There’s no sign of you around
There’s no more corners in this town
And everything else is the same
